FAQ

At Honor the Dog Training, we use a balanced training approach, meaning we incorporate a variety of tools and techniques to clearly communicate with your dog. Our goal is to build a strong, trusting relationship between you and your dog by providing guidance, structure, and leadership. We focus on dog psychology and mindset rather than just obedience, helping your dog develop impulse control, confidence, and a calm state of mind.

Can I do a Board and Train without an e-collar?

For off-leash reliability and clear communication at a distance, we do require the use of an e-collar for our Board and Train program. However, we ensure that e-collar training is done in a fair, low-level, and pressure-free way, helping your dog understand it as a communication tool rather than a punishment. Please note: the e-collar is sold separately.

Do you use an e-collar in the Day Train program?

No, we do not introduce the e-collar during our Day Train program since it is a shorter program focused on introducing foundational commands. However, if we determine that your dog is ready and would benefit from an e-collar, we may incorporate it with your approval. Please note: the e-collar is sold separately.

Can I use the e-collar I have at home?

No, we only use and recommend the Mini Educator. Not all e-collars are created equal—many have inconsistent stimulation, poor durability, and lack the precision needed for effective training. Quality matters, and we want to ensure your dog has the best training experience possible.

What ages do you train?

We train dogs 5 months and older. Starting at this age allows for better focus, engagement, and retention of training concepts.

Do you train aggressive or reactive dogs?

We do not accept dogs with a bite history, severe separation anxiety, or resource guarding issues in our standard programs, as these behaviors require more intensive rehabilitation. However, we are happy to discuss longer-term training options for more complex behavioral cases.

If my dog completed the Day Train program, what are the benefits of continuing with the Board and Train program?

Day training is a great foundation, but the Board and Train program allows us to take training to the next level—especially for off-leash reliability. By immersing your dog in a structured environment for an extended period, we reinforce obedience, impulse control, and neutrality in various situations. This intensive training ensures that commands are reliable under distraction and in real-world scenarios, making off-leash freedom safe and achievable.

Will I get to see my dog during Board and Train?

No, unless we feel it would be beneficial for both you and your dog. A key part of the Board and Train process is allowing your dog to fully settle into the training routine without interruptions. However, we will send regular video updates and progress reports so you can stay informed and confident in your dog’s journey.

Will my dog listen to me after training, or just to the trainer?

A big part of our training process is owner education. We don’t just train your dog—we teach you how to maintain and reinforce the training at home. At the end of any program, we provide hands-on coaching, follow-up support, and structured guidelines to ensure your dog listens to you in any situation.

What happens after training? Do you offer follow-up support?

Yes! Training doesn’t stop after your program ends. We offer follow-up lessons, structured support, and guidance to help you stay on track. For Board and Train graduates, we provide detailed instruction, transition lessons, and ongoing access to help when needed

Will my dog get playtime?

Yes! Play is a key part of our training program. We use tug, ball, and other structured games to provide fulfillment, teach self-regulation, and give dogs a healthy outlet for their energy.

Will my dog be around other dogs?

Yes! When ready, your dog will pack walk with my balanced dogs, helping them build confidence and learn proper social skills in a controlled environment.

Why is your program 3 weeks instead of 2?

At Honor the Dog Training, we believe that time is one of the greatest gifts we can give a dog. Honoring the dog means meeting them where they are, building trust, and creating a foundation for real-life success—rather than rushing the process. Our three-week program allows us to form a meaningful relationship with each dog, ensuring they feel safe, understood, and truly ready to learn. This extra time leads to lasting results, not just quick fixes.
